Orienteering Race - Spain

A couple of weeks ago we were lucky enough to be invited to an orienteering race. I had never heard of this, but there are orienteering clubs throughout Spain that organize races. Usually the races are in the forest, up and down hills and through streams. But this time it was in the old town of Hellin. (For a really cool video on the drum festival during Santa Semana in Hellin)

Trying to figure out where in the world we are.

We met friends and had a lunch and then headed to the race. The race was attended by young and old alike. We were given a map and a card to pass over a sensor every time we found one of the markers throughout the city. We wandered up through the old part where no cars could go, and while our friends and my hubby looked at the map and tried to figure out where we were going, I marveled at the architecture and the peace of the city.

This was such a fun family activity, with enough activity to keep the kids entertained. We are hoping to participate in more of these, maybe next time we will be crossing rivers and hiking up ravines. For more information on the orienteering club that sponsored this event check out their website.

Couple Retreat - The Spanish Way

Hola Amigos,

How is it Wednesday already, this post was supposed to be on Monday, but time has gotten away from me. This week I don't have any school, so I am trying to get caught up on all the little things that I have let go while studying. Also trying to plan our Thanksgiving feast.
This past weekend we attended a marriage conference. One thing I love about the Spanish is that they always include the whole family. This weekend was more of a family retreat. We went to a resort on the beach and though it was too cold to swim in the sea, the hotel had a heated pool. We relaxed, ate good food, spent time with amazing friends, swam in the pool, and had a meeting about the importance of our relationships. My kids crack me up though, they were a little annoyed that it was a 4 star hotel and there were no chocolates on the pillows.

Some of the highlights for me were:
-Waking up to the view above.
-Having to use my spanish to get the maintenance man to come and figure out why my family was locked in the hotel room.
-Walking along the board walk with all the moms, while the dads swam in the pool with the kids.
-The food.
-The jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, all the kids had to try it out.
-Dancing at the disco at 10:30 at night, it was full of all the kids and parents from our group.

Ciudad de las artes y las ciencias / City of arts and sciences in Valencia

My last Valencia post.=)

While in Valencia we visited the city of arts and sciences. A huge complex with a science museum, aquarium, Imax, and more. The complex is huge and has amazing architecture. We walked around the complex exploring and then headed to the aquarium or Oceanografic, the largest aquarium in Europe.

We loved all the exhibits, the animals were active and swimming around, which isn't always the case. I was amazed at how large the Walrus's and some of the other animals were.

This boy kept us busy thinking when he asked us questions such as if a Sea Lion and a Polar Bear got in a fight who would win? Also if a shark and a octopus got in a fight who would win? What do you think?

There were a couple of tanks that had tunnels that you could walk through, the kids loved this part being able to look up and see the fish swimming over you.

There was an outdoor complext that housed the dolphins, and they had a really good dolphin show.

If you go check out the website for any deals or specials going on (while we were there, they had 2 for 1 deals from Mcdonalds). Also make sure to pack your own lunch as food inside the park can be kind of pricey.

Walking on Water

While in Valencia the boys walked on water. They had a couple carnival rides for kids and one we had never seen. They would fill up bubbles with air and put the kids in side. And then let them go on a small pool. It was really funny to watch. Here is a video we made of them while doing it.

I love to wander around the old streets of a town. Thanks to the GPS feature on the Iphone we weren't as lost this time as in other cities. We were searching for the central market, one of the longest running food markets in Europe.

It was so fun to walk around the market and see all the fresh food. But after seeing the live eels and the duck with its beak still attached my family wasn't so sure about eating any food there.

We made a video of the live eels swimming around it was a little crazy.

Long Weekend

Last weekend was a 4 day weekend for us, such a nice break from the daily grind.

In Spain when the holiday is on a Tuesday they will often give you Monday off as well. The only thing is they don't really tell you in advance. So the Thursday before, when we knew that my hubbie was going to get the Monday off, we planned a quick trip. Couldn't let a 4 day weekend go to waste.

We chose to head to Valencia, Spains 3rd largest city and only 2 hours from our house. We stayed in the Spanish military hotel there and visited the city center and the acquarium.

Where we stayed.

Some highlights for me:
- wandering through the city center and stumbling upon some roman pilars at the library.
- wandering through the city and seeing the police in the process of arresting someone, my daughter was dissapointed we didn't see him put in hand cuffs.
- the old food market
- finding a vendor selling vintage table cloths and linens
- the city of arts and sciences and the acquarium
- spending time with my family and seeing a new place

Hola Amigos,

How are you doing? I hope you had a great weekend, ours was busy as usual. I know I haven't been the best poster lately, we have been working extra hard at adjusting to life in Spain and kids in school. I write a weekly post for my sister, last week I talked about our adjustment to school.

Sunday evening is always such a relaxing time, last night we went to the boardwalk for a paseo (walk). In Spain the evening paseo is an important part of the culture. The kids had a blast riding there scooters, and kicking a futbol (soccer) ball around. There has been much discussion in this house if we should continue calling it a soccer ball, or because we live in Spain call it a football. What are your thoughts could you call a soccer ball a football, I'm not sure I can make the switch. Hope you all have a great week!

When my girl was in 2nd grade we read a book about shark's and how they were becoming extinct, she was so distraught she made signs to hang around school that said "Save the Sharks". When she found out our local dog shelter was closing she went to work again.

She made signs, and talked her little brother into helping. She talked to her teacher at school about hanging up a sign and then passed around a notebook to all the kids in her class, that she could communicate with, asking them how many dogs they could adopt.

After all this work I couldn't deny her request to hang up the signs in our local neighborhood.

Sure am proud to be this girl's mom. Watch out Mr. President in 10 years she will be marching on your lawn.

Beach Day

I have decided my favorite time to go to the beach is September. In the summer the beaches are so full there are rows and rows of umbrellas. But in September there are a lot less people, and the water is still plenty warm. Last Saturday we went exploring to find a new beach. I had heard that the coastlines west of us have protected waters and coral good for snorkeling, so we loaded up the van and headed out. We went to Cabo Cope a beach surrounded by farming and one tiny town. We enjoyed a day of swimming, relaxation, tossing the football in the water, playing futbol in the sand, boogie boarding, burying bodies in the sand, and spending time together.

One of my favorite parts was when we went driving back on the dirt roads exploring. There were 3 of these beaches off the beaten path. I can't wait to go back

A Spanish Night Market

I have written before about our wonderful local Friday market. I go religiously every Friday to get all my fruits, veggies, and olives. And if I happen upon the 5 Euro shoe table and they just happen to have something cute and in my size I pick it up, much to the disappointment of my children. They would prefer if we kept moving, they aren’t big fans of me stopping and browsing at each stand.

This week I learned about a night market close by and since I needed to send some birthday gifts we made the trip to see it. The place was crazy busy and huge, we wandered down one path for quite awhile and never got to the end.

I love all the scarves, if summer ever ends here I am definitely going to be stocking up on some scarves for winter.

These dresses are at my market too, and I adore them.

My oldest wants the Ronaldo one for his birthday.

We didn’t stay long at the market, though it was longer than my kids wanted too. They were done, this is the look of a tired and cranky baby.

Happy 10th Birthday

My Aunt always says it is a miracle if the first born survives. They are our experiment kid. I am grateful this one has not only survived but flourished, and touched and blessed our lives in the process. He turns 10 this Sunday, and I am hoping it is a good birthday for him. We are going to go explore a new beach tomorrow, and spend the day relaxing in the sun. He picked up his favorite cereal on our last trip to the base for breakfast. And once he gets his gift, I think I might just win the best mom award.

Spanish 101 - finding a jogging stroller

In my quest to bring you the best information on Spain, I thought I would bring you with me on my journey to master the wonderful language. My Spanish as I like to tell people, I am trying to communicate with is, "muy mal" or very bad, so I still have lots to learn.

Last week I went by the baby store in our little pueblo looking for a jogging stroller. I had planned out in my mind what I was going to say and it really made a lot of sense. I knew the word for run which is correr, and I figured I could wing the rest.

What I said " Necessito un Stroller(point to stroller) por correos, en Estados Unidos es jogging stroller (said with spanish accent)" In my mind I said "I need a stroller for running, in the United States it is a jogging stroller"

What I actually asked for was to have a stroller shipped to the United States. You see correos is actually the word for the post office. They were so confused as to why I would want to mail a stroller to the U.S. Thankfully a friendly lady helped me out and told the shop ladies what I really wanted. And in case you are wondering, no, they don't have jogging strollers in Spain, at least not at that store. The ladies thought I was insane for wanting to run with a stroller.

First day of school

Today was the first day of school here in Spain. This is the day we have been looking forward too with trepidation all summer. The kids are excited to start school, hoping they will meet new friends, and learn the language so they can plot against me (whatever motivates them). But they are also nervous about not being able to speak the language. We made the decision to send them to a bilingual school here, and I am so glad we did, I am hoping the transition will be smoother for them.

This guy is going to do fine, as long as he finds a basketball to play with.

I'm sure this one will have started a club and invited people over for parties and clubs by the end of next week. If your child hasn't come home with an invitation to a non-existent party at my house I am terribly sorry, or we haven't known you long enough.

This little man would be starting kindergarten in the states. He is so excited to meet friends, and I heard the kids prepping him in the car on how it would not be okay to start a food fight. EVER!

Also this morning in the car we were discussing what you could do if you got scared at school. I told them the things I do when I am nervous, say a prayer, take deep breaths, sing a hymn or primary song in my head. Well this guy said, "hey mom I do that too" with a big smile on his face. I said that's great buddy what song do you sing. He said "star-wars". Well whatever works. Here's to hoping there first day is fabulous, and that they want to go back next week.

On our recent vacation I begged and pleaded with a local blogger to take our family pictures. Christine from over at christineinspain is a wonderful photographer who agreed to take our pictures, even though she normally doesn't take family pictures. I think you will agree that she did a great job, and I am so excited with how they turned out.

End of Summer

Hola Amgios,

How was your labor day? It is strange to be out of the country on a national holiday. In Spain it was a normal day as usual. We have been very busy trying to squeze in last minute pool and beach time before summer is over. Our house guest finally left and it was so sad saying goodbye at the train station. The kids are already asking who will be our next visitor. Will it be you? The kids go back to school on friday send prayers our way, I am so very nervous for them. I started back to school on the 22nd of August so have been busy trying to get back into studying and writing mode. I was never very good at either of those so I am having to work extra hard.

We picked up the kids uniforms the other day and the kids were a little aprehensive. We did uniforms in Japan and my kids hated them, I used to get my son dressed two or three times in the morning, he was only 5. But thankfully after a few comments of the "You make that sweater look good" variety they decided they wouldn't be so bad.

I hope you are enjoying your first week of September.

The Boats at Retiro Park

On our recent trip to Madrid we met some friends for a picnic at Retiro Park. Retiro Park is a great place to go with kids and is easy to find in the center of Madrid.

The kids were insistent that we check out the boats while at the park. For an activity in a major city, I was suprised at how inexpensive this one was. To rent the boats it is 5 Euros for 45 min, for up to four people. The kids had a blast having their dads paddle them around the small lake. Definetly a must if visiting Madrid with small kids or dads.

Lazy Summer Days

How was your weekend? We had a fabulous one at the beach. We discovered a new beach and spent time working on our boogie boarding technique.

I keep seeing on facebook that kids are heading back to school. Our kids don't head back till the 9th of September so we still have a few weeks of summer left. Today it was too hot to do anything. We stayed in doors and had a board game marathon, first Ticket to Ride then Monopoly. I kicked butt at Ticket to Ride, but then my oldest took us all to the cleaners with his mad Monopoly skilz.

I love summer for its lack of schedule, but now that we are down to the end of summer, I find myself scheduling more things just to make sure we get it all in. What about you, how have your summer days been? Lazy and relaxed, or super busy and planned?

West Point Band Sunday Performance

Do you have plans for this weekend? If I lived closer to my parents, I would head over to Westpoint for the summer concert series. Every Sunday night through Labor Day they have a concert overlooking the Hudson. They are free and open to the public. I know we are Air Force so maybe this is a little blasphemous, but the Westpoint campus is beautiful and definetly worth the trip.

Taking kids on the Metro or Subway.

Recently we visited NYC and Madrid and traveled around the city by metro. I love when a city has a good metro and bus system; it makes it so much easier to get around. We were apprehensive about taking our 4 kids on the subway in NYC. But after some preperation and creating a few rules for the kids, we were able to travel with success.

For the things we did click to read on.

Before going on the metro:
We wrote our cell phone numbers on pieces of paper and put one in each of the kids pockets.
We pointed out the police and information booths - places to go to if the kids are seperated from the group. If all else fails and they don't see an official worker we told them to find a mamma with kids, the next best thing.

While in the metro:
We assigned each child to an adult, they were to hold tight to them and keep close.
We try to always find the elevators, but if all else fails it is helpful to have a nice strong man around to lift the stroller up and down the stairs. If the big strong man isn't around, my stroller folds up really nicely and has a strap for easy carrying.

On the trains we tell the kids to hold on or sit down. My boys think it is fun to try and surf while the trains are moving, which usually ends with one or more of them crashing to the ground, so we created a must hold on or sit down rule.

We try not to rush; it is better to miss a train and be a little late getting to your next station, than to rush on and leave a little one behind.

Finally keep your belongings close. While getting on to the train in Madrid we were targeted by pickpockets, they thought we must be distracted helping our kids on. Thankfully they didn't get anything and got off at the next stop.

Following these few guidelines has helped us travel safely and successfully. What are your tricks for taking your kids on the Metro or Subway system?

Red Hair in ND May

My husbands family is full of red heads. I love it! When my last baby came along I was so excited when he came out with red hair. Since moving to Spain his hair has started to change colors, just what is expected in the sun. I love his little bleached out hair, but part of me is very concerned that too much of the red is gone, will it grow back red? Here is a photo for every month so you can see the evidence for yourself.

Summer Vacation in Spain

The whole country of Spain goes on vacation in August, or at least it seems that way when trying to make last minute reservations. We are trying to plan a last minute vacation and it is a little hard to find accomadations. My only requirement is a pool and a/c, not to much to ask is it?

While looking at places yesterday I found this amazing place don't you love that pool. To bad its out of my price range and booked. Part of my problem is I always look at all the rentals not just the ones in my price range. So then I am disapointed with the ones I can afford. Gosh it's hard to be me.

Gruyere, Switzerland

My sister in law just spent the last year in Switzerland. While talking about her adventures she told me about the town of Gruyere and the cheese and chocolate factories there. The chocolate factory has all you can eat samples and cooking classes. I don't know about you, but chocolate and cheese seem a very good reason to visit a place. Definitely going on the travel list.

Chocolateria San Gines

While walking away from Plaza del Sol towards the Palacio Real we found the Chocolateria San Gines up an ally next to a used book dealer.

San Gines serves churros con chocolate and is open 24 hours a day. This was our kids first experience with this truly Spanish treat, and I have to say they are fans.

We ordered 5 servings justified of course by how many of us there were.

The chocolate was a little bitter for my sweet tooth, I thought the churros with a little sugar was the perfect combo.

As a family we have officially become churros testers, its a hard job, but somebody has to do it. I will let you know if we find any other great spots for churros.

Glass Igloos in Lapland

While checking out the Kirtsy slideshow of the day, I found something that is definetly going on the travel list. Glass Igloos in Scandinavia. How amazing would it be to be laying in a glass igloo watching the aurora borealis and snuggling under a quilt. My anniversary is in December, maybe this would be the perfect trip.

Spanish Markets

The gerber daisies are my favorite

Every Friday in our Pueblo their is a huge outdoor market. They close off about a mile of city street and fill it with vendors. Traditionally Spaniards didn't have cars to travel around in so they depended on the market to bring them what they needed. That is why today you can still find stalls that sell shoes, housewares, food, clothing, jewelry, and also underwear. The market is a different day in each of the surrounding towns, but I am a little partial to our market.

The vegetables and fruits are amazing.

Special Moments

My sweet girl turned 8 this year, and in our church that is the magic number for getting baptized. She chose to be baptized in NY while visiting family, knowing that if she got baptized in NY more people would be their on her special day. My dad took this picture on our way into the church, and I love the excitement and joy on her face. What is it about your little girl being baptized that causes the tears to flow. It was a special day!

Traveling with Kids

We spent last weekend in Madrid, we found a great apartment on VRBO that was right in the heart of the city. It always makes me smile by how easily kids are entertained. We were in this culturally rich city and they were more excited about much simpler things.

ICE CREAM
To keep four kids happy in the heat of the summer, we made lots of ice cream stops. Every where you go there are signs that show all the ice cream options, we were stopped by the sign and the baby started signing "more" and pointing at the sign.

WATER FOUNTAINS
We found a fountain and I couldn't keep my family out of the water. My kids can never resist water.

BIRD CHASING

For our baby he was very good traveling around in his stroller. But what he enjoyed most of all was chasing the birds. On our last day in the Plaza Mayor there were pigeons eating some bread. He could not be contained he was so excited to chase them.

My most amazing sister-in-law has come to visit us. We have eaten out, saw the sites, swam at the beach and the pool, and had an amazing time.

But probably the best part of all is that she is still here. She was supposed to fly back to the states stand-by, but all the flights were full, and so she will be here for a couple more weeks. She is a little sad to not be heading home, and we are trying to be sympathetic, it doesn't work though when you are so glad about something.

Though as this picture shows, she might be done dealing with my kids. Or maybe that is just her frustration at having to drive in the car with four kids for 5 hours. I completely understand.

The Perfect Mohawk

This summer my boys have been trying to perfect the mohawk. Because I won't actually cut their hair in a mohawk they have to make do with gel and water. The other day they got it just perfect and we had to document the momentus occasion.

First you will need Gel and water, unfortunately for dad this was the last of his.

This obviously is the most important part, the actual syling. Don't want to mess this up.

Then perfection.

What handsome boys, I especially love how the babies does a curly cue in the front. How have you been spending your summer? Hopefully in fun and adventurous ways.

New Look and Spanish Food

Hola amigos,

I have a new blog background as you may have noticed and I am super in love with it, thanks Jenna your the best. Since we now have internet my posting should be a bit more regular. We have our very first guest at our casa. My sister in law is in limbo and has decided to spend her time with us. We couldn't be more pleased. And not just because she has agreed to watch the kids for a date night. =) Last week on her first night we took her to a traditional spanish meal, and then walk along the beach. We hope to have more beach time this week and then this weekend it is off to Madrid.

Spanish Wedding

Today while we were out we stumbled upon the coolest thing.

A spanish wedding procession. We were leaving the pastry shop and this procession of the brides family was walking by.

Complete with flower girl holding the rings. I was a little shocked that the little girl was walking along with the rings on the actual pillow.

And best of all the novia (bride) and her sweet padre. They were walking down the street to the Ayuntamiento (city hall) were the novio (groom) and his family were waiting.

White Dress Party

We were invited to our first Spanish Party, a going away party for the family we are replacing.

It was a white dress party, where everyone comes in white, and was so much fun. Spaniards go on a different time table than any where I’ve ever lived. The dinner part of the evening was supposed to start at 8:30, so in my mind I was thinking we would stay for a couple hours after that, not to be rude, and then home in bed by 11 at the latest.

When I told my friend later about my plan she laughed at me. They did start burning the wood for the barbeque around 8:30 and let that burn for a couple hours to get the coals nice and hot, then finally put the meat on around 10:30 or so. There were appetizers, food and drinks the whole time, but the meat didn’t come until later. The meat was delicious and the people we met were wonderful.

The kids had a blast playing at the beach and then later after they had put on their “white” outfits they changed back into their swimming suits to jump in the pool around 11.

Thanks to my friend Heather for inviting us to the party and giving us the best introduction to Spain a girl could ask for.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

One of thee two things our kids wanted to do in NYC was visit the Met. So off we went to Central Park to visit this amazing museum.

We started off in the ancient greek room since our oldest is a Percy Jackson fiend. Then off to ancient Egypt, and then finally to visit some paintings of the Old Masters. We didn't have much time because we were heading to Mary Poppins later that day, but it was so fun and some place we will definetly go again when returning to NYC.

The Met was free for children and since the price is suggested, my mom offered them a deal they couldn't refuse. It was really inexpensive and totally worth it. If you are in NYC go the Met you will love it.

Carmona Spain

I have discovered a new favorite pass time.

Wandering through old cities with my family.

Today on our way home from Rota Spain we stopped off for lunch at Carmona a beautiful old city on the top of a hill surrounded by castle walls.

We ate at a cafe and sat at the edge of the plaza.

Wandered around looking for the cathedral and generally trying to get lost.

Then before getting back in the car we stopped for some ice cream to finish it off.

Such a fun side trip to an otherwise long car ride.

Yankee Stadium

Here is another fun idea for NYC. While there we thought it would be fun to take in a Yankees game. I went to StubHub and found really cheap tickets for the game. The only annoying thing was the service fees associated with Stub Hub. But even with the fees we came out cheaper than buying from the box office.

Once we purchased the tickets I printed them from the printer and that was what they used to get in.

One other tidbit of information. You can bring food into the stadium, it has to be in a bag or softsided container, but that saves you alot of money. Hola from Spain

Hello Friends,

We have been in Spain for a couple weeks now and life is starting to settle a little. Moving is stressful and I have had moments of frustration and tears, but for the most part we are enjoying our time here. We have a nice 4 bedroom house about 15 minutes from the beach. It is a little strange getting used to the Spanish house. Though some of the things I thought would be the hardest haven't been bad at all.

I thought the lack of dryer and overly small washer would be awful, but I find it quite relaxing hanging up laundry and the tiny washer actually cleans things really well.

The kitchen here is a lot smaller than I am used to, which means that of course there is no dishwasher, but my kids have enjoyed washing the dishes by hand. My oldest actually told me he enjoys doing jobs together and we should never have a dishwasher again.

We still have no internet, so posting will continue to be sporadic, but hopefully soon.

JCW's was first introduced to me by a friend on the way home from a rugby game one extremely windy afternoon and I have been straight up addicted to it ever since.

Ok, I'll tell you.
I generally get a bleu bacon cheese burger and a mini caramel shake. And just trust me on the mini. The small could probably feed a family of 3.

We have had a great time the last couple weeks in NY. We have seen the sites, visited with family, and enjoyed our last couple days in the states. Soon we will be in Spain, it has seemed like something we have been planning for forever, so it feels crazy that the big day is finally here.

Staten Island Ferry or How to see the Statue of Liberty with 4 kids.

The kids only asked to do 2 things while in NYC one was the Met and the other was visit the Statue of Liberty. Yesterday we went to see the Statue of Liberty. We started off going over to the ferry that takes you out to the island. It was spendy, but since we were already in NYC we didn't want to miss it. The line was long, there was a 1 1/2 hour wait to get through the security check point just to get on the ferry. With our 4 kids waiting in line that long sounded like torture.
Then the best thing happened, we got an insider tip. It wasn't extremely important to the kids to get out on the actual island, so we found out about the Staten Island Ferry.

A free ferry service that runs between Staten Island and South Ferry. The ferry ran every 30 min and we were able to walk on and take a short 30 min ferry ride past the Statue of Liberty. When we arrived at Staten Island we had to disembark the ferry but were able to get right back on one to ride back to South Ferry.

I really liked the ferry service it was clean and quick. Plus most important we avoided the long security check points that were at the actual Statue of Liberty Ferry. With older kids it might be fun to get out and hike around the statue, but this was perfect for our family.

Going away dinner.

We are done! We have packed and cleaned the house, attended going away dinners and lunches, ran our big race, and have flown to New York to spend our last 2 weeks in the states with family. Currently the kids are watching Home Alone 2 and making plans for what we will do in the city tomorrow. Right now we are planning the boys hitting a Yankees game and the girls attending Mary Poppins. Along with something called the Shake Shack. We can't wait.

Passports

After reading this post about passport covers I was inspired. If you have ever traveled with passports, where you have more than one you are in charge of, you can understand why I think this idea is so brilliant. We have 2 passports (no-fee and civilian) for everyone in our family so this will make my life so much easier.

Moving Week

The movers are here. Only a couple of hours behind schedule, but today's shipment is small so they should be done quickly. We have 2 more shipments that will probably take the rest of the week. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

Moving Stress

We are right in the middle of our move, packers all next week, then cleaning, end of year school events, and a trip to Grandma's. During all this busyness I have noticed a few things that always happen to me right before or during a move.
- Going grey: I found a few more grey hairs that weren't there a couple months ago
- Insomnia: I find myself not being able to sleep going over lists in my head, I have a notebook by my bed to write everything down.
-Irritability: I am just a teeny-tiny bit senstive right now, so if everything doesn't go my way I can get ... well a little emotional.
-Breaking out: My skin gets so crazy from all the stress, late nights, and crappy food.
I sometimes start to feel a little like this.

Maybe it's not that bad, just don't ask my family for confirmation.

There are certain things I am doing to try and stay sane.
-Letting things go: In the life and in the military everything doesn't always go as planned, I am trying to be patient with the process, and be as prepared as I can be, then everything will work out.
-Take care of my body and mind: Which means working out and making healthy eating choices even on the road. And taking time for personal meditation and prayer every day.
-Pamper myself: I got some new face lotion, hoping to help the breakouts, and am going to get my hair cut and colored before we leave.

How about you, when you are stressed from either a move or other things what do you do to stay sane?

While going through boxes I found old photos, these particular photos were from the summer of 98. I spent the first part of the summer in Jerusalem and the second in Alaska. I always knew I wanted to travel, but that was the summer where it clinched the deal. Good thing my hubbie is in the AF so I can feed my habit.

My Weekend

My weekend was a busy one. Saturday there was a 10-mile run, still limping by the way. Followed with a hot date with the hubby and friends. We went out for sushi and checked out roller derby. Roller derby was fun once we figured out the rules, and it turned out to be a great date. Sunday was a lazy day, church was canceled due to weather so we relaxed and enjoyed the calm before the storm. Our first set of movers is coming on Friday, wish me luck.

POPS in Oklahoma

When we road trip anywhere near Oklahoma we look forward to a trip to POPS. In fact the other day my little one asked when we could go again. It is a gas station/diner that also has a huge (read 500+) bottled soda collection. The soda is my families favorite part, they love picking out different flavors to try. I love the diner style food, it is delicious and affordable especially for a bigger family like ours. When we have gone at peak hours there has been a bit of a wait for the food, but it is definitely worth it.

Its not hard to miss the huge soda bottle off of Route 66.

I love the soda bottles on the walls so fun.

Pops is located just off Route 66 north of the city.

Organized!

Are you organized? Me not so much, the only thing that keeps my house from ending up on hoarders is the fact I move so much and my dear sweet hubby. So you can see why a move across the ocean with 3 separate shipments was starting to stress me out.

That is why I called in the big guns, two really good friends came to help me get started. They came and helped me organize my craft room and my closet with only minimal tears and sobbing on my end. It motivated me so much I am doing one organizational thing a day and it has worked quite well, it feels nice to be able to see the top of my fridge.

Tonight instead of sitting on the couch and watching something from netflix I texted my friend and asked her to quick give me something to organize. She replied with my bathroom cupboards and my recipes. The bathrooms were easy but I have a tiny problem of loving and collecting recipes, not that I use them all, but I love to look at the pictures. I commited to reducing my recipes by 50% and wanted to show her the picture proof of my job.

The Fargo Half Marathon is coming up quickly, last weekend was the 8 mile run, since there was snow we ran inside on the track 80 laps, it was killer, but it did help me realize that I might actually be able to run the whole race. National Park Week

Have you heard about this. From April 16-24 Is National Park Week over 394 National Parks are free. I am feeling very in the dark, and am wondering if I am close enough to any National Parks to make a trip. I was going to tell you my favorite National Park, but I think it would be a toss up between Zion's and Glacier. Though I have only been to a handful of parks so I guess I should explore more before I make that decision. What is your favorite National Park? Will you be visiting any this week?

Welcome Spring (snow)

First of all you should know winter snow in ND is not fun. It is the consistency of sand, not good for packing or playing in and it is far to cold in Jan and Feb to be out for longer than 5 minutes. Second you should know that spring snow in ND is fun. It is packable and finally warm enough to be outside. The problem with spring snow is that by the middle of April NO ONE wants to be outside playing in snow.

Yesterday we had a spring storm and I decided that despite the LONG list of things to do to get ready for the move, we were going to build a snowman and play in the snow. So I took a snow day of sorts. We went out to build a snowman and also built a snow fort to snowball Dad when he got home from work, and the kids when they got off the bus. My arm is sore today from snowballing. I think it was worth it.

This week is the UND football clinic. A bunch of 2nd -5th graders running around the Alerus Center playing football. This boy LOVES football and is so excited to go and play. What makes this especially cool is the actual UND football players helping the kids.

Since you will all be coming to visit me in sunny Spain, I think Take Your Kids to Europe is an essential addition to your reading library. This book is based on the authors trip to Europe with her 2 kids. Part of the idea of the book is spending time in each country and getting to know the cultures and people. I loved the way the author broke down travel with kids and made it seem possible. She writes taking into account not only the childs point of view, but how as a parent you can make it through all the rough patches. I also enjoyed the addition of other people's feedback and ideas. My very favorite section though, is the "totally biased guide to what to see and do" they discuss things to do in each country. This section includes prices, phone numbers, location and any other pertinent info.

Cynthia Harriman author of this amazing book also has a website which offers more excerpts from the book and more travel ideas. I especially love the blog which shares stories from other families and their experiences in Europe.

Avis Rental Car

Cruising down the strip in our sweet ride!

When I headed to Vegas with my sisters I rented my car from Avis not only were they the cheapest, they offered even more discounts for paying up front. Each employee I worked with was helpful and had a smile on their face. When the check engine light came on before we left the garage they quickly gave me another car with a free upgrade, so pleased with the mustang convertible btw. We will be renting again with our upcoming move and I am going to stick with Avis maybe I'll get lucky again and get a convertible.

Happy Birthday to my sweet angel. In true girl fashion her birthday was stretched over the whole weekend.

Friday night birthday party, pajama theme, freezer paper t-shirt painting, movie and popcorn.

Saturday daddy daughter dance, "Knight for a princess" put on by our local parks and rec.

Sunday was her actual birthday, breakfast in bed, scavenger hunt for presents, and being able to say things like "I don't have to set the table its my birthday."

Monday ears pierced. A little traumatic, but worth it in the end.

So happy this girl is in our family. She makes me smile every day.

So WE ARE MOVING TO SPAIN. We have known for awhile, but it hasn't felt official until today. We recieved our official papers, "the orders". Now the real stuff can begin; setting dates for movers, shipping the car, reserving a spot for the kids at school, renting a house. I love this part of moving when you go from sitting around, to actually doing something towards the process. It's a happy day.

Last night after swimming I was trying to change quickly before the baby got away. So to keep him busy I opened all the lockers. He couldn't crawl away until they were all closed. I am seeing OCD tendancies here. So dang cute!

This boy had to get shots today. He did so well I offered him a blizzard afterward. All he wanted was the sponge bob sticker. Seriously who turns down a blizzard.

I found these pictures on the camera of my girls photo shoot. I think this is the day she was staying home from church because she was sick. I guess she was feeling better.

He just took 1st place for the 3rd year in a row in his wrestling tournament. I was proud of him, even if it feels wrong to cheer for your child as he wrestles another kid to the ground. I guess all the wrestling and goofing around at home pays off.

When we first learned we were moving to Japan, I can't say I was particularly excited. I had never thought of visiting there, and all I could think of was the banana spider my husband had told me about. Three years later I had fallen in love with a people and a culture that is so unique there is nothing like it in the world. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people in Japan right now.

Donuts at Little America, Wyoming

When I was a kid my family would stop at the Pilot Gas station in Mountain Home, Id every time we drove by. They had the best ice cream counter and it was the perfect place to stop on our trip.

The Little America about an hour east of Evanston is a place that we stop with our kids now. They have the best donuts, and cleanest bathrooms. Both important facts when embarking on a two day road trip.

This is my oldest and baby enjoying a yummy donut. They are glazed, yummy and large enough to share. Except for Dad who always needs his own.

A long time ago I started this blog. I wanted to keep it updated, I really did. Life got in the way and it got pushed to a back burner, well more like taken completely off the stove. I have lots of good excuses one being pregnancy, not my finest hours; those I spend pregnant. Another being the sweetest little bundle of joy you have ever seen, added to our home.

I am going to try again. We'll see how the second time around goes, wish me luck!

In a priority mail envelope arrived a big part of our trip to Spain. Our passports in beautiful traveling blue. Both of our civilian passports had expired, but it was so easy go here if you have to renew and you can do it through the mail. I would put my passport photo up, but it was really an awful picture. More on our trip coming soon.

I found this fun photo contest with an intruiging challenge. On the Intelligent traveller blog they are challenging us to take our peeps, marshmallow peeps that is and photo them around the world or your neighborhood. They request that it be a recognizable location. That leaves ND out I don't think a peep in front of a snow covered field is very recognizable, could be mistaken for anywhere.

Digging Out

So the blizzard has passed, it is still bitterly cold, but the sun is shining and that makes me happy. The temperatures are on the rise which also makes me happy. This is the Pilot and my oldest digging out our cars we had about a foot of snow across the whole driveway. They had some sort of game going on, baseball using snow and a lightsaber.

Dreaming of white sands

Right now it is about -5 degrees with a -35 degree wind chill. I am dreaming of white sands, blue water, and laying on a towel with a good book and the Pilot lying by my side. Belize is sounding really good, here you can bid on a vacation. Oh if only I had a million dollars lying around.

Grandma's Christmas Present

For Christmas this year Grandma gave us money, a tradition passed down from great grandma. When I was younger this money was always used for activities that wouldn't have normally happened. You know going out to eat, ice skating at the triad center, going to a movie or show. Things that are so fun to a kid.

In that same tradition I wanted to do the same thing for my kids. We had planned to take them skiing on one of the bunny hills located here in North Dakota, but unfortunately with our funeral trip that was canceled.

But the Pilot and I are nothing if not flexible (military life will do that to ya) and we quickly changed our plans. I had heard of the Great Wolf Lodge from a friend who visited it in Kansas and they loved it. So we found one on our route and thought it might be a nice thing to do on our way home to relax a little.

Each room reservation comes with passes to the indoor water park. The water park was fun a little older, but clean and big enough that the kids didn't get bored. They have this huge bucket that fills up with water and then a loud bell warns you it is ready to dump. Whenever I heard the bell I would look over and my 2 oldest would be standing under it. My son thought it was hilarious that one time it almost pulled of his shorts.

One other thing I have learned in military life is to always ask what discounts apply. So if you are military ask for the hero's package*, this got a great deal on one of the nicer rooms. We stayed in the Kid Cabin suite, the kids loved having there own log cabin right in the room. And it was nice for us to have our own space too. We got the breakfast package you can buy with your room reservation. It was five dollars* a person and totally worth it. Since if you pay the morning of it is significantly more. It was also really good food and lots of it. Perfect for any vacation.

All in all we will visit the Great Wolf Lodge again. Though we might have to wait till next years Christmas present from Grandma.

*Prices and packages correct for the last weekend in Feb 2009 and may have changed.

Where do you want to go? We have this map on our wall down stairs I love to look at it and think where I want to go next. This year the Pilot and I are planning a trip to Spain. And then a reunion in the Adirondack Mountains this summer and maybe a couple more road trips if I can squeze them in.

Lately I have been dreaming of an African Safari, a road trip along the Alaskan highway, or a disney cruise. A girl can dream can't she. So where are you planning to go this year?

Car Trips

Last week we had to make an emergency trip to NY for a funeral. It was a sudden trip planned in 24 hours. Luckily we are car travelers and the explorers are good travelers. We have picked up a few ideas that work for us along the way and I am graciously going to share.

-Make a list. As soon as I know we are going somewhere I start writing down everything that needs to be packed or done. If it isn't on the list it doesn't get packed. One of my very smart friends puts a basket in an easily accessible place and just adds things as she thinks of them.

-I let the kids pack there own car backpack. They usually pick a few toys, books, and activities. This also comes in handy if we are visiting someone who doesn't have kid items.

-Support your local library. I visit the library and pick up some new to us books, books on tapes, and movies.

-DVD player need I say more.

-Pack a sack lunch or use the dollar menu. Packing a lunch not only saves you money but saves time. This last trip I just climbed in the back of the van when we stopped for gas and made sandwiches for everyone.

-We have a PSP and gameboy that don't come out often. But on a 20 hour road trip they become part of the family.

-Check the weather, road conditions, and if there are tolls along the way. You can put your trip into weather.com on the interstate forecast page and get weather conditions for each road you are on. Many states have toll roads along the way, you want to check the states you are traveling and make sure you have spare change in the car, or look into a toll pass.
